It's time for another episode of "Perez's Picks" where our editor Perez discusses great new books. Today: Tarot of Hate.

It's truly a pleasure to present Tarot of Hate, written by my colleague and fellow Darkwater author, Antonio Simon, Jr. First off, that name! Portentous, isn't it? Death and murder are in the cards when you deal from the Tarot of Hate, and the book delivers in spades. It's a collection of eight stories that showcase the very worst of the human condition. Within these pages you'll find murder, revenge, presidential assassination, and all sorts of horrors.

Mr. Simon admittedly wrote these tales of horror during a period in which he was "really pissed off" (actual quote), and it shows. This book is not for the squeamish. His stated aim was to push the bounds of decency, and he does just that in the very first story, Dogfaced Eve, which is disturbing on several levels. Another gem in this collection is Hunter, Hunted, about a reality TV show gone awry when a guest comes on looking for bloody vengeance.

Feeling brave? Deal from the Tarot of Hate. It's the most disturbing $0.99 you'll spend short of a freak show admission ticket.

It's time again for "Perez's Picks" where our editor Ramiro Perez discusses great new releases. Today: The Father of Flesh, by Nicholas Paschall.

The Father of Flesh is 50% Indiana Jones, 50% H.P. Lovecraft, and 100% horror.

Ancient evil befalls a rural Chinese village. The town is overrun by mass of skin that devours houses and people. Professor Nickels, occultist & archaeologist, is called in to investigate the otherworldly horror. He's no stranger to the paranormal, having spent a lifetime battling monsters from beyond human understanding. But age is catching up to the old professor, and this new threat is bigger than anything he's ever faced. With two graduate students & Chinese military, he sets off to thwart ancient menace before it engulfs the world.

Add to the mix exotic locales, globe-hopping adventure, a smattering of magic, and you have the makings for a blockbuster horror adventure.

Paschall knows horror. When it comes to satisfying scares, The Father of Flesh delivers.

Here's "Perez's Picks" where our editor Ramiro Perez discusses great new releases. Today: Chris Cobb's A Moon Called Sun.

NYT bestseller Piers Anthony calls A Moon Called Sun: "intriguingly different scifi, hard-hitting."

Aliens hijack modern-day Trace, sending him back to the 1800's. The Seminole take Trace in as they flee Andrew Jackson's advance. Meanwhile, Josette is plucked from occupied France in WWII to fight an interstellar war. On the line is her heart's desire. Can Josette trust her new alien handlers? Will Trace escape back to his time? Can they survive on a moon called sun?

Author Cobb's sci-fi / space opera weaves a story of galactic intrigue & conquest. There's plenty of action and unique alien races, not to mention a few plot curve balls you won't see coming, but they're immensely enjoyable.

A Moon Called Sun is a thrilling sci-fi romp across time and space that won't disappoint.

It's time again for "Perez's Picks" where our editor Ramiro Perez discusses great new releases. Today: Christopher Cobb's The Slant Six.

Picture a vintage car buff. Now fast-forward to the year 2252 and swap cars for spaceships. That's Loman Phin in The Slant Six. Loman's a washed-up racer with a vintage spaceship (i.e. a rust-bucket). And then he gets the chance of a lifetime. A fortune's on the line if he can transport forty three kilos of human skin, only, that skin's still attached to the lovely Portia McCoy. But Loman isn't the only one in on the game; the whole solar system's out looking for Portia, and they want Loman's blood.

But there's more to it than just that: the book's also got snarky robots, sexy space vampires, death races, a mad king of a dwarf planet, and much more.

If you like sci-fi that takes chances and doesn't pull punches, blast off with Chris Cobb's The Slant Six.

Here's we go again with "Perez's Picks" where our editor Ramiro Perez discusses great new releases. Today: Michael Warriner's The Man In The Forest.

If you're looking for some paranormal horror with a unique twist, look no further than The Man In The Forest. It's a fascinating premise: Vincent, a musical prodigy, travels to Romania to upstage his concert rival once and for all. But when he gets there, witnesses the supernatural creature known as the "forest man," who imparts is deadly curse. Vincent is now on borrowed time. He's got only a few days to put on the musical performance of a lifetime. Rightfully, because the curse is always fatal within a week. Each night, he is visited by a deadly nightmare that robs him of his sleep, and gradually, his sanity. This all builds to a breathtaking climax near the end of the book that is spectacular in its description and execution.

Author Warriner tells a great story. He has an eye for scene and a dark imagination. Vincent's nightmares are deliciously twisted. What's more, Warriner paints a captivating portrait of Romania with rustic castles, cathedrals, forests, and villages.

Definitely pick this one up. It'll keep you up at night with the haunting chant of: "Run away while you still can, before you see the forest man."

Perez's Picks: Holy, By Abbie Krupnick

Abbie Krupnick's debut novel: Holy, is unlike anything you've read.

On the surface, it's the story of Gus Stevens, a troubled youth who's finding his way through life. But then Krupnick sprinkles in some dark fantasy and a dollop of horror. Gus lives a double life - when he sleeps, he enters the Dream World, ruled over by an insane and egotistical magician. In the Waking World, a giant frost lizard stalks him everywhere he goes, looking to eat him whole. In order to regain control of his life, he must undergo a psychoanalytic exorcism, breaking away from everything he has ever thought was real.

Told from Gus's perspective, the novel discusses such issues as mental health and finding one's place in the world. Gus is an unreliable narrator: everything he experiences, he accepts as real (well, it is real, isn't it?) however, careful readers may pick up on subtle clues as to what's actually going on.

Holy is a tour de force by an exceptionally talented young author.

Ready or not, it's time again for "Perez's Picks" where editor Ramiro Perez discusses great new releases. Today: Slasher Sam, by Simon Petersen.

Author Petersen is a popular travel blogger from New Zealand. He's also a connoisseur of horror films, and his knowledge of the genre shows in Slasher Sam. The titular killer is an ordinary person with a day job who just so happens to also be a serial killer. Looking to garner immortal infamy, the killer pays homage to all the great slasher films by gutting victims in creative ways, then posting it for the world to see at SlasherSam.com (seriously, visit that website!). It's all done in splendid first-person, putting readers in the slash zone when the blood and guts go flying.

It's a fresh take on horror: genre-savvy, self-referential, fourth-wall-breaking, and at times humorous with buckets of the red stuff thrown in for good measure. Just remember: in cyberspace, everyone can hear you scream.
