From Miami author and college professor Dr. Julio Varela comes our newest release: Alma Mutters. It's a biting parody of the private school system that will leave you in stitches. The release date is March 31, 2019.
Xavier Mas Penoso is in over his head. He's returned to Bellarmine Jesuit Prep to teach Philosophy to the entitled teenage offspring of Miami's wealthiest families. Only, the hallowed halls of his alma mater aren't quite as gilded as when he was a student. Textbooks and notepads have been replaced with more laptops and i-Gadgets than the NSA Headquarters. The clergy running the school are P.T. Barnum’s spiritual successors: media-savvy priests who know that suckers are born every minute, and that they need a top-dollar education, too. Under their tutelage, the leaders of tomorrow develop skill sets in private and public sector corruption, depending on the boy’s appetites.
Xavier soon realizes he’s trapped in a job he hates. Academics has taken a distant backseat to Bellarmine’s Holy Trinity: the Hype, Spectacle, and Buzz that justify its raking in tuition fees twice the size of J-Lo’s biker shorts. But Xavier is not one to give up on his principles so quickly. With empty-headed teens keyed up on Ecstasy on one hand, and a corrupt administration on the other, he plots his glorious revenge that could cost him his teaching career.
And just who are Hugo and Victoria? They're the private eye and vampire chick duo that solve the most outlandish of crimes. They're also the main characters of Buck Buchanan's crime noir parody, The Secret Files of Hugo & Victoria.
The party starts at Murder on the Beach, the premiere mystery bookstore in Delray, Florida. Friday, March 8th, at 7 p.m., author Buchanan will present his book and sign autographs. This is a free event, so come on over for a fun time!
Murder on the Beach is located at: 273 Pineapple Grove Way (NE 2nd Ave), Delray Beach, FL 33444.

A while back we reported that our upcoming anthology of automotive horror, It Came From The Garage!, was sure to have twists and surprises, including surprise authors. Today we reveal the first of those surprise authors. It's none other than the UK's very own Guy N. Smith. He's a best-selling author with over one hundred books to his name. Best known for his pulp fiction-style horror, Mr. Smith's literature is beloved at home in his native UK and internationally. The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural considers Smith's horror novels: "endearing, imbued with lively storytelling and the tacky brilliance of the horror and science fiction cinema of the 1950s." (Sullivan (ed), Jack (1986). The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural. Viking.)
Mr. Smith's tale, "Wheels of Evil," is about a hexed classic Jaguar roadster, and the horrific events that follow when its new owner restores the car to pristine quality.
Watch this space for more news on our groundbreaking new anthology, and stay tuned for a release date later this year.
Each author is treated to his or her own biography page (with a headshot where available) as well as a list of publications with our company. It's still going to take some time before the project is 100% completed, so please pardon our digital dust as the webpages go up.
Darkwater Syndicate is pleased to announce two new members to its growing family of authors. Keep your eyes peeled for their books, coming a little later this year.

Buck Buchanan: The Secret Files of Hugo and Victoria
Judging by the characters in his book, you might think the author, J.E. “Buck” Buchanan, is out there around the third ring of Saturn. In reality, he’s firmly grounded, which is where the mystery side of his novel, The Secret Files of Hugo and Victoria, comes in. Buck conducted and supervised major criminal investigations (homicide, smuggling, official corruption, fraud, etc.) for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for a good chunk of his life. The secret files in his novel aren’t based on those experiences because according to him, they were much weirder than mutant vampires, werewolves, and witches.
He wasn’t born into a life of crime (writing). After he escaped high school with minimal scars from sports and young love, he studied and worked at engineering and business before settling into crime fighting. Since then, in addition to consulting, he has focused on writing, winning several short story contests and conducting a writers’ workshop for the Palm Beach County Library. He lives in South Florida with his wife Susan and every stray dog and cat she can drag in. He says he can’t complain about it because she dragged him in too.
The Secret Files of Hugo and Victoria blends laugh-out-loud comedy with noir mystery and paranormal action. Catch it February 28, 2019.
